LED Exterior and Interior Installations  E-mail

To create the atmosphere of a village within a city, many BIAs use pedestrian and decorative lighting. greenTbiz is committed to assisting the BIAs in reducing the cost of this lighting through energy conservation.

The Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas led the way in replacing incandescent holiday lighting with light emitting diodes (LEDs) within the BIAs. Many of these LED displays can be viewed throughout the city during the Cavalcade of Lights.

greenTbiz has continued these conservation efforts to include exploring LED technology for pedestrian lighting as well as other exterior and interior applications. greenTbiz's first LED pilot project can be viewed at the Exhibition Place where 16 LED street lights have been installed. Please view the Media Release and backgrounder for more information regarding this project.

greenTbiz continues to explore LED applications through assisting with the following pilot projects:

Bloorcourt BIA Exterior Pedestrian LED Installation

Through facilitation from greenTbiz, and with assistance from the Deputy Mayor’s Office, World of Lights and Toronto Hydro installed six LED pedestrian fixtures along Bloor Street West in the Bloorcourt BIA. This additional lighting has improved the walkability of the neighbourhood thus, promoting positive patronage to the BIA.

Phin Park Exterior LED / Solar Installation

At the request of Councillor Fletcher’s office and Toronto Parks and Recreation, greenTbiz facilitated the installation of a solar LED fixture provided by Carmanah. The pilot fixture, located in Phin Park, near Danforth Avenue and Coxwell Road, has demonstrated the potential for solar and LED technology in city parks.

Grassroots Interior Retail LED Installation

This past summer, greenTbiz facilitated the installation of 35 LED lamps in the retail store, Grassroots, located in the Annex BIA.  Seven watt LED lamps were provided by Turolight and replaced existing energy intensive, 50 watt, halogen lamps.  Grassroots observed an immediate reduction in their electricity consumption resulting in over 2 kW of electricity savings and $900 in energy costs savings per year.

Palace Pier Interior LED Installation

greenTbiz was invited to consult on the largest residential installation of LED lighting in North America to date.  This lighting project, at the Palace Pier Condominium in Toronto, employs close to 1,300 LED MR16 lamps in the hallways on all 44 residential floors. The Palace Pier was initially considering installing 35 watts halogen lamps; however, they decided to use LED MR-16s which only require 4 watts per lamp.  The CRS LED MR16 uses 87% less energy than the previous halogen lamps and will reduce electricity consumption by 349,226 kWh per year.

City of Welland Exterior LED Street Lighting Installation

Welland has replaced all of the current streetlights on Fitch Street between Prince Charles Drive and South Pelham Road.  This is the first installation of its kind in any municipality in Canada.  If the Fitch Street pilot project proves to be successful, all of Welland’s streetlights may be converted to LED technology over a 3 to 5 year period.  This retrofit will save the City of Welland approximately $185,000 per year in electricity costs.  greenTbiz was contracted by the City of Welland to conduct a public consultation process in order to determine the level of acceptance of the new LED street lighting.  This process has been completed by greenTbiz through door-to-door and online surveying.
