In part due to greenTbiz’s leadership, Toronto was named Canada’s first LED City on July 11, 2007. The LED City initiative is an expanding community of government and industry parties working to evaluate, deploy and promote LED lighting technology. This technology is promoted across the full range of municipal infrastructures, which work to share best practices about evaluation, promotion and installation of LED technology through municipal infrastructure.
LED City, first launched in February 2007 in Raleigh, NC with the support of Cree, focuses on fostering and sharing information and experiences among participants. By participating in the initiative, Toronto will be able to benefit from Raleigh's knowledge about these new pilots, while also sharing information accumulated during current projects throughout the city. While cities in the USA and around the world continue to join the LED City program, Toronto will continue to be there, front and centre, through greenTbiz and TABIA, to share lessons learned with other cities.
